Valmiki was an ancient Indian sage whom the Hindu tradition recognizes as the author of the Sanskrit epic the Ramayana and as the first poet (Adi Kavi). Valmiki features in the epic itself as the sage who provides shelter to Sita in his hermitage and who teaches the poem to her and Rama’s twin sons, Kusha and Lava.
