GLOS Provides Essential Services The Great Lakes Observing System provides support for critical infrastructure and services that support national security, economic resilience, efficient maritime commerce, offshore industry, and public health & safety.

GLOS projects support science, policy, management, and industry in the Great Lakes. When choosing what to fund, we are guided by our priorities.

A request for proposals for projects expanding GLOS’ capacity for monitoring the impacts of coastal hazards was developed and released in late fall 2025. Five projects have been selected for funding: The Buffalo-Niagara Waterkeeper will develop a local water level observing network in eastern Lake Erie and the surrounding watershed.

Data served via GLOS is certified by the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), which means that it adheres to common federal standards for the entire data lifecycle. GLOS is the Great Lakes’ Regional Information Coordination Entity (RICE).
