Oryx, (genus Oryx), any of three large antelopes (family Bovidae, order Artiodactyla) living in herds on deserts and dry plains of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
Oryx belong to the genus Oryx, a group of large antelopes specially adapted for arid and semi-arid habitats. They’re not deer or goats, though sometimes confused as such. Instead, they are closer relatives of gazelles and other antelopes.
Native to the Kalahari Desert, the African oryx, or gemsbok (Oryx gazella), is a large antelope that now lives in southern New Mexico. It weighs on average up to 450 pounds (204 kg) and stands 47 inches (1.2 meters) tall at the shoulder, almost as tall as the roof of the average car.
Oryx are herbivores and feed in the early morning and late afternoon. Their diet consists of thick leaves, melons, rough grass and thorny shrubs. They also dig for tubers and roots in the ground. Oryx can survive without water for very long periods of time.
There are four species of oryx living in Africa and the Middle East. They are large antelopes with long, spear-like horns — with the Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) being the largest of the oryx species. They are a true desert animal, with a thick, horse-like neck; a short mane; and a compact, muscular body.
