ERIC Through the Decades ERIC, the Education Resources Information Center digital library of the U.S. Department of Education, celebrated its 60th birthday in 2024. ERIC was founded in 1964 as a way for the Office of Education, the predecessor to the U.S. Department of Education, to collect and share education research.
ERIC indexes a wide variety of journal sources. The coverage of an approved journal source is determined by an examination of three to five current issues during the source review process, but may be updated at any time. Source coverage is defined as follows:

1964 – ERIC Gets Its Start ERIC Program begins in the Office of Education on May 15. “It was an office without funds and an office without a program,” but early framers had big plans. Harold Haswell is first ERIC Director.
