Beren was a mortal man on the run from the Dark Lord.Thingol sends his servents to lay hands on him and lead him to Menegroth as a malefactor, but Lúthien, forestalling them, led Beren herself before the throne of Thingol, as if he were an honoured guest.
Tolkien is particularly fascinated with this character, it is safe to say that she was his most beloved creation, along with Beren. Lúthien was the elven maiden princess of Thingol.
Carcharoth played a role in the Quest for the Silmaril. He was serving as the guard when Beren and Lúthien tried to enter the fortress of Angband to obtain the Silmaril. He grew suspicious of the pair as Beren was disguised as Draugluin. Just a while before their arrival, Carcharoth had heard about the death of Draugluin.
