Benito Juarez (1806–72) was president of Mexico from 1861 to 1872. For three years (1864–67), he fought against foreign occupation under the emperor Maximilian and sought constitutional reforms to create a democratic federal republic. His accomplishments made Juarez a national hero in Mexico.
