Barry Clark Barish (born ) is an American experimental physicist and Nobel Laureate. He is a Linde Professor of Physics, emeritus at California Institute of Technology and a leading expert on gravitational waves.

The effects are very small. Beginning in the 1970s the LIGO detector was developed to record gravitational waves. Barry Barish had a leading role in the project from 1994 and made crucial contributions to the development of the detector. In 2015 gravitational waves were detected for the first time.
Barish later spearheaded the GEM experiment at the Superconducting Super Collider, aiming to delve deeper into particle physics phenomena. However, his most significant contribution came with his leadership in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO).
