Gupta dynasty, rulers of a vast empire established in the Indian subcontinent in the 4th century CE, often regarded as the golden age of India in terms of cultural and intellectual achievements. After a sustained invasion of the Hunas, the dynasty came to an end in the 6th century.

The Gupta Empire stretched across northern, central and parts of southern India between c. 320 and 550 CE. The period is noted for its achievements in the arts, architecture, sciences, religion, and philosophy.

The Gupta dynasty flourished immensely under Chandragupta II, but rapidly weakened during the reign of his two successors. A wave of invasions launched by the Huns, a nomadic group from central Asia, started in 480 C.E.

The name is based on the Sanskrit word गोप्तृ goptṛ, which means "guardian" or "protector". [1] According to historian R. C. Majumdar, the surname Gupta was adopted by several different communities in northern and eastern India at different times. [2]
