Gupta dynasty, rulers of a vast empire established in the Indian subcontinent in the 4th century CE, often regarded as the golden age of India in terms of cultural and intellectual achievements. After a sustained invasion of the Hunas, the dynasty came to an end in the 6th century.
The Gupta Empire stretched across northern, central and parts of southern India between c. 320 and 550 CE. The period is noted for its achievements in the arts, architecture, sciences, religion, and philosophy.
The Gupta Empire (c. 320–550 CE) marks one of the most prosperous and culturally vibrant periods in Indian history. Often referred to as the Golden Age of India, this era witnessed extraordinary achievements in mathematics, science, medicine, art, literature, and governance.
Based in northern India, the Gupta Empire (320–600) was one of the largest political and military empires in world history. While the Gupta rulers named themselves mah?r?j?dhir?ja (king of kings), they did not claim to be of divine origin and ruled with relative benevolence.
During this time the Vakataka kingdom acted in close alliance with the Gupta. By the time of his death, Chandragupta II had brought the Gupta Empire to its widest extent. His son, Kumaragupta (415-54), was able to reign in peace, as all the other kings in India were in awe of the Gupta.
