We have children, ages 10 and 12, who love water sports. In June, we will be traveling to Varenna and Sorrento for 3 full days in each area. Which location is better for snorkeling and/or kayaking? Any rental places to DIY, or should we go with a tour?

I took a snorkeling tour while on the island, and I've never snorkeled anywhere else quite like it. Belize is a beautiful country and I'm sure you'll enjoy however you spend your time!
In any case I wouldn’t consider Sardinia without a rental car. Sicily has more to offer, in terms of historic sights, so spend more time in Sicily, unless snorkeling and scuba diving is the most important thing for you.
I went on two snorkeling trips, one was pretty bouncy and the one on the Great Barrier Reef was fairly rough. I used patches and the wrist bands for both boat trips with great success.
