Two accessible parking spaces can share an access aisle with the access aisle between the two parking spaces (except in angled parking). An access aisle can be placed on either side of the parking space (except in angled parking where it must be located on the passenger side of the parking space).
The ADA Standards require that an accessible route connect parking space access aisles to the accessible entrance they serve but they do not specifically prohibit the accessible route from running behind parking spaces.
Dimensions (all dimensions are minimums): Accessible parking spaces are eight (8) feet wide; van-accessible spaces are eleven (11) feet wide. Access aisles for either type of space are five (5) feet wide.
Car parking spaces shall be 96 inches (2440 mm) wide minimum and van parking spaces shall be 132 inches (3350 mm) wide minimum, shall be marked to define the width, and shall have an adjacent access aisle complying with 502.3.
In compliance with the ADA, every parking facility must include at least one van-accessible parking space with an access aisle. These spaces must be dispersed among accessible entrances and located along the shortest accessible route to the entrance they serve.
Access Aisle: Must be at least 60 inches (5 feet) wide, adjacent to the accessible parking space. Van-Accessible Spaces: Must be at least 132 inches (11 feet) wide with a 60-inch access aisle or 96 inches (8 feet) wide with a 96-inch (8 feet) access aisle.
For every 6 or portion thereof of accessible parking spaces, at least one must be van-accessible with a wider access aisle. This accommodation is critical for individuals who use wheelchair lifts or require extra space to transfer mobility devices.
