A psychological assessment can include numerous components such as norm-referenced psychological tests, informal tests and surveys, interview information, school or medical records, medical evaluation, and observational data. A psychologist determines what information to use based on the specific questions being asked.
The current guidelines focus on two areas identified as deficits in the 2001 guidelines: the need for greater specificity of assessment constructs and foundational knowledge, and the need to address the expanded and more specialized roles of psychologists using assessment and evaluation tools in various clinical and other professional settings.
