new welder here. forgive me if this question is dumb. purchased a miller multimatic 215 so i can do mig and tig with same machine. it has a separate hose connection for argon/co2 (mig) and a separate hose connection for argon (tig). i have the 2 separate tanks hooked up to the separate...
Sometimes, if working on big pieces of aluminum, one might use an argon-helium blend for TIG. And the 'original' shielding gas for TIG was straight helium (ala Heli-Arc) until they found out that argon worked fine and was usually cheaper.
I have always welded aluminum with argon. I know helium allows for better penetration which would be nice. I am running my Tig on a 50 amp breaker right now and it can get taxed pretty easy with aluminum. Helium is more expensive though right? Is it worth the cost? Is a mix a good choice...
You can use 100 percent argon, but you will not be satisfied with the bead you get when welding mild steel. Because Argon has a low thermal conductivity, you will end up with a finger-like penetration into the base metal as opposed to the broader even penetration of a 75/25 mix.
