He was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom during much of Queen Victoria 's reign. In 1829 he was awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal at Cambridge for one of his first pieces, "Timbuktu".
Alfred, Lord Tennyson, was the fourth of 12 children raised in a lonely rectory in Somersby, Lincolnshire, England. Though home conditions were difficult, his father, who served as the village rector, managed to give him a wide literary education.
