The person may be taking an oath, giving oral or written testimony, or signing or acknowledging a signature on a legal document. In each instance the notary attests that certain formalities have been observed.
I occasionally get pushes for something called a "witness closing" via snapdocs. What kind of job is that exactly? Are they just asking for a notary to show up and witness the signing? (a local notary friend does that often, but it's because she has a friend who is a title agent and asks her to do it, she didn't seek out such arrangements.)
