The phrase “The Rising Sea” is due to Grothendieck [Gr5, p. 552-3], with this particular translation by McLarty [Mc, p. 1]. The phrase was popularized as the title of Daniel Murfet’s excellent blog [Mur], and I want to particularly thank Daniel for his generosity in sharing this title.
