The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) was originally published in 1989 in the journal Stroke. The NIHSS is a 15 item questionnaire designed to measure stroke severity. The measure is calculated by summing the numerical score for each of the 15 questions.
The NIHSS is a composite scale derived from the Toronto Stroke Scale, the Oxbury Initial Severity Scale, the Cincinnati Stroke Scale and the Edinburgh-2 Coma Scale.
