I ended up purchasing the kit from Doc. I'll most likely start a new thread at some point documenting my experience with the kickstarter installation.

I put a kickstarter on my 89 650 for under $200 using KLR 600 parts found on Ebay. Later model KLR's need more parts to get the job done, possibly including the old style clutch basket. If the case on your KLR is a solid casting where the kick lever shaft would stick out, you would need an older style side cover.
Howdy, I am seriously looking for a kickstarter kit (part no. 99995-1007) to buy. Originally available as an optional part for the 1987's, they are hard to come by but still out there somewhere. I have the pre-96 clutch basket and the earlier transmission that is required for my later year bike...
Then the kickstarter from a KZ1000, brand new from UK, not original (around 50-60€, but came to 96€ with shipping and customs). And lastly primary gear (34€), but it included a lot of nice bits and pieces: water pump gear, idler gear, clutch basket nut and washer, some sort of metal bushings that I’m not familiar with.
I think Kawasaki discontinued the kickstarter kit long before they deleted the plug . . . after all, as you mentioned, a pre-1996 clutch basket is required. Further, my 2007 KLR650 has a hole in the case for the kickstarter shaft (although, as mentioned, kickstarter kits were long discontinued, the case design remained unchanged); was this ...
