Janapadas were the kingdoms and republics of Vedic India from the late Bronze Age to the Iron Age (c. 1200 BCE to 6th century BCE). Emerging from settled agricultural communities, they were originally named after the dominant "Jana" (people/tribe).

Janapada (जनपद) refers to a “tract of land”.—We have seen that from the days of the Brāhmaṇas the word janapada has been used to denote a particular people or territory in ancient India.

Politically speaking, the Vedic period, specifically towards the end of it, saw the formation of various Indian states in the north that are known as janapadas. Over time, these states would develop into 16 major states, which are collectively known as the mahajanapadas.

This has given rise to the name - Janapada, where Jana is referred to as ‘people’ and Pada is referred to as ‘foot’. By the time of the 6th century B.C. there were nearly 22 multiple Janapadas.

A Janapada was essentially the earliest form of territorial organization in ancient India, emerging around 1000-600 BCE. Think of it as the ancient equivalent of a modern state or province, but with much deeper cultural and social significance.
