Spiegel Online was one of the most widely read news sites in Germany. It was launched with its own editorial team, which is independent of the parent magazine. At the beginning of 2020 the website was renamed and redesigned. The print news magazine and the online portal now both appear under the name Der Spiegel, with a uniform design. The two editorial offices had already merged in 2019.

The news magazine Focus was founded as a competitor to Spiegel magazine. Compared to the Hamburg-based Spiegel, Focus offers shorter texts, lots of graphics, images and rankings and more consumer-friendly and useful information. Its editorial department moved to Berlin in 2015.
