George Frideric Handel (1685–1759) was a German-British Baroque composer, famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems and organ concertos. Music and classical lovers may have encountered the Messiah's 'Hallelujah' chorus at Christmas, or his Music for the Royal Fireworks.

Handel was responsible for putting on operas at the academy, and wrote some of his greatest masterpieces (Giulio Cesare; Rodelinda) while in his position there.

Handel visited several major cities and he composed operas, oratorios, and many small secular cantatas while he traveled. He ended his visit to Italy with the spectacular success of his fifth opera, Agrippina (1709), in Venice.

Handel was commissioned in 1717 to write music for a royal water party, and composed The Water Music to accompany the King’s progress along the River Thames. Shortly after, he moved to Cannons, the estate of the Duke of Chandos in Edgware.
