Faust goes to the healer Manto ’s temple, which doubles as a portal to Hades, the Grecian Underworld, where Faust hopes to rescue the shade of Helen. Mephistopheles seeks erotic adventure with Thessalian witches, and ends up disguising himself as the monstrous hermaphrodite Phorkyas.

Although the most interesting parts of the Faust story are wholly legendary, there was in fact a historical Johann Faust around whom the legends formed. Faust was born in Knittlingen, Württemberg, around the year 1480, was educated at the University of Cracow in Poland, and died around 1540 in Staufen im Breisgau.
Faust is visited by Mephistopheles and offered a life of hedonistic excess and earthly pleasures as a means of gaining greater understanding of the universe. Faust, who apparently had never watched any episodes of The Twilight Zone, foolishly agrees and bargains away his soul.
Faust's weapon, Walpurgisnacht, shares its name with an event which occurs in Goethe's Faust, Part One. Walpurgisnacht is the gathering of witches and spirits on April 30th, which Mephistopheles guides Faust to in order to complete his descent into immorality. Faust's icon depicts a glass flask bound to a Homunculus.
