There's the DRZ400 which is Kickstart only and the DRZ 400E which is to my understanding a DRZ400 with electric start, both of these are equipped with the FCR-39 slant carburetor, then there is the DRZ 400S which has the BSR 36 and the SM model also equipped with that same carburetor.
The DRZ400 also needs case savers & a better engine guard. I haven’t ridden a dr650 so I can’t comment on it. You can check out everride’s channel on YouTube for more info on the drz400. He is based in south eastern Utah. My next adventure bike will be a dedicated drz400s model. Until then my son & I are enjoying the sm mostly on road.
