Target 3, colloquially known as “30x30”, specifically calls for the effective protection and management of 30% of the world’s terrestrial, inland water, and coastal and marine areas by the year 2030. Put simply, 30x30 is the biggest conservation commitment the world has ever seen.

We are excited to share our third Pathways to 30x30 Annual Progress Report, highlighting our collective work towards the ambitious goal of conserving 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030.
Thirty-by-thirty (30x30) refers to efforts by the global community to conserve 30% of terrestrial and marine habitat by 2030. The movement started with international calls for setting aside portions of the globe as protected, with U.S. involvement beginning in 2021.
30x30 is a ten-year plan to prevent mass extinction events, protect biodiversity, and make the planet more resilient to climate change. The name comes from the key takeaway from this plan: the need to conserve at least 30% of the Earth by 2030 to make a real difference.
