Bamboo is a type of grass so constant mowing with your mower set to its lowest setting will help to keep if from spreading. If you want to get rid of the mature bamboo that is on your property, you will need to cut it back or dig it up and apply an herbicide, and the timing of the cutting and herbicide application is critical.

Bamboo plants should be spaced 3-5 feet apart to form a dense screen. The faster spreading types can be planted farther apart if you are willing to wait a little longer for the screen to fill out. If you want an immediate screen, some types can be planted very close together as long as they have some space to spread in width.

As a whole, bamboo is not successful in central Oregon. There are clumping types that are being sold here, such as Rufa, that seem to overwinter. You might want to inquire at local nurseries for their knowledge of success with varieties you are curious about.

Bamboo is very fast growing, so if these are established plants with large root systems already in place, recovery should be quite fast and you will have new, large canes by the summer. (Unlike a small, new plant that first needs to grow a root system before adding much above-the-ground growth).
