Salva Dut, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, survived a harrowing childhood during the civil war and eventually founded Water for South Sudan. His incredible journey—from fleeing violence to becoming a global humanitarian leader—continues to inspire as he brings clean, sustainable water to rural communities across South Sudan.
Salva, along with nearly 4,000 of the Lost Boys, would be brought to America under the auspices of the US State Department. It was a journey of 10-thousand miles into a promising but confusing new life.
Salva Dut, a former Lost Boy of Sudan, founded a nonprofit, Water for South Sudan, in 2003 to provide clean, safe water and improve hygiene and sanitation in South Sudan. His story became the inspiration for a popular book for young readers, A Long Walk to Water.
Salva Dut was 11 years old, sitting through the last lesson in class and looking forward to the trip home with his schoolmates. Suddenly all hell broke loose.
