The English word "libation" derives from the Latin libatio, an act of pouring, from the verb libare, "to taste, sip; pour out, make a libation" (Indo-European root *leib-, "pour, make a libation").

Greeks offered propitiatory libations to prevent the deceased from returning to the upper world to haunt those who had not given them a proper burial. It was often depicted in religious iconography as a figure holding attributes such as a cornucopia, patera (libation bowl) or snake.
