Working on hunches (and therefore not a qualified answer), odd works to mean different or strange: "That man is odd." A "odd" number would be a number that is strange, off-tilt or not entirely normal. Since odd also means the opposite of even we get a dual meaning with regards to numbers. In my opinion, "odd" is similar to "some": "some 250 years."

In other words, it appears that “odds” is used as a synonym of “chances.” But that would add even more confusion to the usage of low vs high odds. Questions: 1) Is “odds” in the “slim odds” definition used as a synonym of chance? If so, is that a correct usage? 2) What does “slim odds” really mean in the end?
I find "I hope it's nothing" decidedly odd, as though Sam is saying "I hope it turns out to be a false alarm" even though Jenny may already know that it is something serious.
